Bilder Onofrio Panvinio (1530–1568) – Panorama of the Roman Triumphal Procession – Engraving (1580)
Beskrivning
This monumental panoramic engraving depicts the grandeur of a Roman Triumphal Procession as it winds through a stylized cityscape and approaches a triumphal arch. The elaborate scene serves as a composite historical reconstruction, illustrating the magnificence of triumphs celebrated by legendary figures such as Lucius Aemilius Paullus, Scipio Africanus, and Pompey the Great. The composition is densely packed with detailed figures, including lictors bearing fasces, musicians blowing trumpets, sacrificial oxen, and exotic elephants carrying towers, all culminating in the appearance of the victorious commander in his chariot. The work reflects the Renaissance scholar's dedication to antiquarian accuracy, synthesizing information from ancient coins, bas-reliefs, and literary texts to visually recreate the spectacle of imperial Rome.
Onofrio Panvinio was a renowned Italian historian, archaeologist, and Augustinian friar from Verona who served as the librarian to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. Considered one of the foremost authorities on Roman antiquity during the sixteenth century, he produced numerous scholarly works on Roman history, topography, and religious customs. Panvinio's detailed visual reconstructions of ancient ceremonies and architecture were highly influential, serving as standard references for scholars, artists, and publishers well into the eighteenth century.
