Beskrivning

This engraving presents a sophisticated heraldic device or impresa dedicated to Antonio Perenotto, Cardinal Granvelle. The central motif depicts a masted ship navigating turbulent sea waves, surmounted by the Latin motto Durate. The image is enclosed within an elaborate Mannerist cartouche featuring architectural elements, garlands of fruit, and two flanking male herms or atlantes. Below the illustration, a decorative drop-cap initiates a dense block of Italian text that provides a scholarly and moralistic commentary on the symbolism of the ship and the motto, which is derived from the first book of Virgil’s Aeneid. This work serves as an intellectual emblem intended to convey the steadfastness and virtue of the Cardinal in the face of political or religious adversity.

Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne was a versatile Dutch Golden Age painter, engraver, and poet known for his allegorical subjects and genre scenes. While highly regarded for his grisaille paintings and satirical illustrations, he was also a prolific designer of book illustrations and emblems that combined visual wit with moral instruction. His work often navigated the complex intersection of politics, religion, and social commentary during a period of significant transition in the Netherlands. Van de Venne’s skill in composition and his ability to translate classical literary themes into compelling visual metaphors made him a sought-after artist for aristocratic and intellectual publications across Europe.
