Beskrivning

This engraving presents a heraldic device or impresa dedicated to Guido Bentivoglio. The central image, set within an elaborate Mannerist cartouche, depicts the mythological figure of Atlas supporting a celestial globe on his shoulders, accompanied by the Latin motto Maius Opus. The ornate frame features two reclining male figures atop architectural scrolls, with garlands of fruit and a central grotesque mask at the top. Below the illustration, a decorative drop-cap initiates a block of Italian text titled A Favola D'Atlante Presso, which provides a scholarly commentary on the myth of Atlas and its allegorical significance regarding strength and intellectual pursuit. This work serves as an intellectual emblem intended to celebrate the status and character of the subject within the refined artistic traditions of the late Renaissance.

Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne was a versatile Dutch Golden Age painter, engraver, and poet known for his allegorical subjects and genre scenes. While highly regarded for his grisaille paintings and satirical illustrations, he was also a prolific designer of book illustrations and emblems that combined visual wit with moral instruction. His work often navigated the complex intersection of politics, religion, and social commentary during a period of significant transition in the Netherlands. Van de Venne’s skill in composition and his ability to translate classical and contemporary themes into compelling visual metaphors made him a sought-after artist for aristocratic and intellectual publications across Europe.
