Bilder Sebastiano Serlio (1475–1554) – Section and elevation of a domed circular temple – engraving (1566)
Beskrivning
This engraving illustrates the architectural design of a classical circular temple, providing both a sectional view and an external elevation. The left side of the plate features a longitudinal section of the dome and its interior supporting structure, while the right side displays the exterior elevation, showcasing the rhythmic arrangement of arched niches and decorative pilasters. These technical illustrations were published as part of Tutte l'opere d'architettura et prospetiva, a seminal Renaissance treatise that categorized the principles of classical Roman architecture. By providing clear visual models alongside geometric proportions, Serlio’s work served as a fundamental practical guide for architects, facilitating the spread of Italian High Renaissance style across Europe.
Sebastiano Serlio was an Italian Mannerist architect and theorist whose publications revolutionized architectural education. He was the first to emphasize high-quality illustrations as the primary medium for teaching theory, making complex classical rules accessible to a broad audience of builders and designers. Serlio served as a court architect to King Francis I of France, significantly influencing French Renaissance design through projects at the Palace of Fontainebleau. His systematic treatment of the five classical orders established a definitive framework for Western architecture that remained influential for centuries.
