Bilder Conrad Malte-Brun (1775–1826) – Two maps: Europe under Charles V and Europe in 1789 – hand-colored engraving (1812)
Beskrivning
This hand-colored engraving contains two distinct maps of Europe printed on a single sheet, illustrating significant geopolitical shifts over three centuries. The upper map depicts Europe during the reign of Emperor Charles V in the sixteenth century, highlighting the vast territories of the Holy Roman Empire and the Spanish Monarchy. The lower map shows Europe in 1789, on the eve of the French Revolution, delineating the established borders of major powers like the Kingdom of France, the Russian Empire, and the Prussian state. This work was part of the Atlas Complet du Précis de la Géographie Universelle, a monumental publication designed to provide a systematic visual history of global geography and political evolution. By juxtaposing these two eras, the plate serves as a scholarly tool for analyzing the rise and fall of empires and the emergence of modern European nation-states.
Conrad Malte-Brun was a prominent Danish-French geographer and journalist who became one of the most influential figures in the development of modern geography. After being exiled from Denmark for his political views, he settled in Paris where he co-founded the Société de Géographie and began his monumental multi-volume work, Précis de la Géographie Universelle. His maps were frequently produced in collaboration with the skilled cartographer Pierre Lapie, known for his precision and clarity. Malte-Brun's work played a crucial role in systematizing geographical knowledge during the Napoleonic era and remained a standard reference for decades.
