Beskrivning

This engraving presents a historical bird's-eye view of the city of Vlissingen as it appeared in the year 1500. The composition shows the early urban layout within its circular defensive walls and gatehouses, centered around the prominent St. James' Church. The bustling harbor is filled with numerous sailing vessels, including several large three-masted ships and smaller fishing boats navigating the Westerschelde. A decorative draped banner in the upper left corner identifies the subject as Oud Vlissingen van den Iare 1500. The work was published in the Cronyk van Zeeland, a comprehensive historical and topographical chronicle of the province of Zeeland, which served as an essential record of the region's urban and maritime evolution during the late seventeenth century.

Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and author best known for his monumental historical works concerning the province of Zeeland. Although he studied law at Utrecht University, he dedicated much of his life to compiling vast amounts of historical and geographical data, culminating in his most famous publication, the Cronyk van Zeeland. This work is highly regarded for its detailed descriptions and high-quality engravings, many of which were executed by leading artists and engravers of the period under Smallegange's direction. His contributions remain essential primary sources for the study of Dutch regional history and seventeenth-century cartography.
