Beskrivning

This engraving presents a detailed bird's-eye topographical map of the city of Tholen, shown within its complex star-shaped defensive fortifications and bastions. The plan highlights the organized street layout, major civic buildings, and the surrounding rural land and waterways, including the Eendracht river. A historical inset at the top right depicts the city as it appeared in the year 1599, and a legend at the bottom left provides a key to significant landmarks. The work was published in the Cronyk van Zeeland, a comprehensive historical and topographical chronicle of the province of Zeeland, which serves as an essential record of the region's urban and military architecture during the late seventeenth century.

Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and author best known for his monumental historical works concerning the province of Zeeland. Although he studied law at Utrecht University, he dedicated much of his life to compiling vast amounts of historical and geographical data, culminating in his most famous publication, the Cronyk van Zeeland. This work is highly regarded for its detailed descriptions and high-quality engravings, many of which were executed by leading artists and engravers of the period under Smallegange's direction. His contributions remain essential primary sources for the study of Dutch regional history and seventeenth-century cartography.
