Beskrivning
This print presents a detailed geographical map of the French provinces of Orleans, Perche, Maine, Anjou, and Touraine. The composition highlights major urban centers such as Orleans, Tours, and Le Mans, alongside topographical features including the winding courses of the Loire and Seine rivers. The territorial boundaries of the various regions are clearly delineated with hand-applied outlines in red, green, and yellow, reflecting the administrative divisions of mid-eighteenth-century France. A decorative baroque cartouche in the lower left corner contains the title and identifies the specific provinces depicted. This work was produced as part of Le Rouge's efforts to provide accurate and accessible geographical information for administrative and educational purposes.
Georges Louis Le Rouge was a prominent French cartographer, engraver, and publisher who held the prestigious title of Engineer to the King. Originally from Germany, he established a prolific career in Paris, where he produced an extensive body of work including terrestrial and maritime atlases, military plans, and architectural studies. He is particularly noted for his ability to synthesize complex geographical data into clear visual formats that appealed to both government officials and the general public during the Enlightenment.
