Bilder Henricus Hondius II (1597–1651) – Map of the Lordship of Mechelen and the Duchy of Aerschot – engraving (c. 1630)
Beskrivning
This engraving presents a detailed geographical map of the Lordship of Mechelen and the Duchy of Aerschot in the southern Netherlands. The composition is noted for its decorative elements, including a prominent cartouche in the upper left corner flanked by a nobleman and a lady dressed in the fashion of the early seventeenth century. A second ornate cartouche in the lower left contains a small inset view of the city of Mechelen, while a large coat of arms supported by a figure with a cornucopia occupies the lower right. The map features a meticulous rendering of the region's walled towns, forests, and river networks, published as part of the expanded editions of the Mercator-Hondius atlas, which set the standard for European cartography during the Dutch Golden Age.
Henricus Hondius II, also known as Henricus Hondius the Younger, was a distinguished Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher. Born into a renowned family of mapmakers, he continued the legacy of his father, Jodocus Hondius, by expanding and refining the famous Mercator-Hondius atlas. Working often in collaboration with his brother-in-law Jan Jansson, Henricus produced updated maps that were celebrated for their accuracy and artistic embellishments. His publications, such as the Atlas Novus, played a crucial role in maintaining Amsterdam's status as the center of the cartographic world during the seventeenth century.
