Bilder Henricus Hondius II (1597–1651) – Map of the Fossa Eugeniana – engraving (1627)
Beskrivning
This engraving presents a detailed cartographic study of the Fossa Eugeniana, a strategic canal project intended to link the Rhine and Meuse rivers. The map illustrates the intended course of the waterway through the Rhineland and Gelderland, featuring the series of planned fortifications and sconces designed to protect the canal during the Eighty Years' War. The topography is meticulously rendered with hand-applied color highlighting territorial boundaries, forested areas, and the winding paths of the major river systems. A prominent decorative cartouche in the lower right corner features the title and a dedication, while a scale of miles and the publisher's imprint are positioned in the lower left. This work was a significant military and geographical document, reflecting the ambitious engineering efforts and territorial conflicts of the Dutch Golden Age.
Henricus Hondius II, also known as Henricus Hondius the Younger, was a distinguished Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher active in Amsterdam. Born into a celebrated family of mapmakers, he continued the legacy of his father, Jodocus Hondius, by expanding and refining the influential Mercator-Hondius atlas. Working often in collaboration with his brother-in-law Jan Jansson, Henricus produced updated maps that were renowned for their geographical accuracy and artistic embellishments. His publications played a crucial role in maintaining Amsterdam's status as the global center of cartography during the seventeenth century, documenting both the known world and the strategic developments of contemporary European warfare.
