Bilder Henricus Hondius II (1597–1651) – Map of the Rhine, Waal, and Meuse Rivers – print (c. 1630)
Beskrivning
This print presents a detailed cartographic survey of the major river systems in the Low Countries, specifically focusing on the Rhine, Waal, and Meuse rivers. The composition is divided into two distinct horizontal registers, each providing a complementary topographical view of these critical waterways. The upper section illustrates the course of the rivers from Arnhem and Nijmegen toward Gorinchem, while the lower section depicts the surrounding river branches and adjacent territories, including parts of Brabant and Cleves. The map features a meticulous rendering of hydrography, urban settlements, and strategic forts, framed by multiple scale bars and a prominent baroque title cartouche. Published in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age, this work was a significant contribution to the Atlas Novus, reflecting the paramount importance of these river systems for both regional commerce and military defense during the seventeenth century.
Henricus Hondius II, also known as Henricus Hondius the Younger, was a distinguished Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher. Born into a celebrated family of mapmakers, he continued the legacy of his father, Jodocus Hondius, by expanding and refining the influential Mercator-Hondius atlas. Working often in collaboration with his brother-in-law Jan Jansson, Henricus produced updated maps that were renowned for their geographical accuracy and artistic embellishments. His publications played a crucial role in maintaining Amsterdam's status as the global center of cartography during the seventeenth century, documenting both the known world and the strategic developments of contemporary European territories.
