Beskrivning

This engraving presents a detailed geographical map of the Lordship of Groningen in the northern Netherlands, oriented with the north to the right. The composition highlights the city of Groningen and its surrounding territories, including the various administrative districts known as the Ommelanden. The map features significant coastal details such as the islands of Borkum, Juist, and Rottumeroog, alongside the complex network of canals and waterways characteristic of the region. Decorative elements include a prominent baroque title cartouche in the upper right supported by two figures, an ornate coat of arms, and multiple nautical compass roses with sailing vessels navigating the North Sea. The work was published as part of the Mercator-Hondius atlas, serving as a critical cartographic record of the Dutch landscape during the height of the seventeenth century.

Henricus Hondius II, also known as Henricus Hondius the Younger, was a distinguished Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher active in Amsterdam. Born into a celebrated family of mapmakers, he continued the legacy of his father, Jodocus Hondius, by expanding and refining the influential Mercator-Hondius atlas. Working often in collaboration with his brother-in-law Jan Jansson, Henricus produced updated maps that were renowned for their geographical accuracy and artistic embellishments. His publications played a crucial role in maintaining Amsterdam's status as the global center of cartography during the seventeenth century, documenting both the known world and the strategic developments of contemporary European territories.
