Beskrivning

This engraving presents a detailed geographical map of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, including the Duchies of Pomerania and Mecklenburg. The composition covers a vast territory from the Baltic Sea in the north to Lusatia and Saxony in the south, highlighting major urban centers such as Berlin, Frankfurt an der Oder, and Stettin. The topography is meticulously rendered, showing the extensive network of rivers, including the Oder, Elbe, and Havel, alongside forested regions and territorial boundaries. Ornate decorative elements include a large title cartouche in the lower left corner featuring a seated figure and a prominent coat of arms, while the lower right displays a scale of German miles flanked by cherubs. The map also features several nautical compass roses and sailing vessels in the Baltic Sea, reflecting the strategic and commercial importance of these northern European territories during the seventeenth century.

Henricus Hondius II, also known as Henricus Hondius the Younger, was a distinguished Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher active in Amsterdam. Born into a celebrated family of mapmakers, he continued the legacy of his father, Jodocus Hondius, by expanding and refining the influential Mercator-Hondius atlas series. Working often in collaboration with his brother-in-law Jan Jansson, Henricus produced updated maps that were renowned for their geographical accuracy and artistic embellishments. His publications played a crucial role in maintaining Amsterdam's status as the global center of cartography during the seventeenth century, documenting the evolving political and geographical landscape of Europe.
