"Non, nisi nupta, viget." This engraving depicts two palm trees in a landscape, illustrating a classical belief that the female palm tree only thrives and bears fruit in the presence of a mate. This emblem is part of the series Sinn' en Minne-beelden included in the collection Alle de Wercken by Jacob Cats. The work was published by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in Amsterdam in 1658. The composition utilizes the palm tree as a moral and romantic symbol of marriage and partnership during the Dutch Golden Age.
Jacob Cats was a celebrated Dutch poet, jurist, and diplomat who became one of the most popular authors of his time. He is primarily known for his didactic emblem books which provided moral guidance through the combination of poetry and illustration. His influence was so great that he was widely known by the nickname Father Cats. Beyond his literary success, he served in high political office as the Grand Pensionary of Holland.
