"Nimio splendore fatiscit." This circular engraving depicts a salamander amidst a swirling fire, a classical symbol of endurance and the paradoxical nature of passion or light. The print is an emblem from the Sinn' en Minne-beelden, contained within the comprehensive volume Alle de Wercken by Jacob Cats. It was published in Amsterdam by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in 1658. The work functions as a moral allegory, warning that excessive brilliance or passion can lead to exhaustion or destruction, reflecting the didactic traditions of the Dutch Golden Age.
Jacob Cats was a celebrated Dutch poet, jurist, and diplomat who became one of the most widely read authors of his era. He is primarily known for his emblem books, which utilized intricate imagery and verse to provide moral and religious instruction to the Dutch public. His influence was so pervasive that he was affectionately known by the nickname Father Cats. In addition to his literary success, Cats held significant political authority, serving as the Grand Pensionary of Holland.
