Bilder Jacob Cats (1577-1660) – Emblem of the beacon and the sailing ship – Engraving (1658)
Beskrivning
"Monstrat, non ducit." This circular engraving depicts a coastal scene at night where a tall beacon light stands on a wooden pier, casting light toward a sailing ship navigating turbulent waters. This emblem is part of the Sinn' en Minne-beelden, included in the collected works titled Alle de Wercken by Jacob Cats. The work was published by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in Amsterdam in 1658. The imagery serves as a moral allegory, suggesting that while guidance or examples can show the way, they do not physically lead the individual, a common theme in the didactic literature of the Dutch Golden Age.
Jacob Cats was a highly influential Dutch poet, jurist, and diplomat who became one of the most widely read authors of his time. He is best known for his emblem books, which utilized complex imagery and verse to provide moral and religious instruction to the Dutch public. His cultural impact was so significant that he was affectionately known as Father Cats. In addition to his literary success, Cats held high political office, serving as the Grand Pensionary of Holland during the mid 17th century.
