Beskrivning

"Spotted Opossum" depicts a marsupial positioned on a hollow tree stump. This engraving was published in London by John Stockdale on July 20, 1789. The work was produced for the publication of the journal of Arthur Phillip, titled the Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay, which provided one of the earliest accounts of australian wildlife. It represents a significant historical and scientific record of the fauna encountered during the early period of european exploration and settlement in the region.

Peter Mazell was an irish engraver and painter who was active in London during the second half of the eighteenth century. He specialized in natural history illustrations and frequently provided plates for major scientific works of the era. Mazell exhibited his landscapes and animal studies at the Society of Artists and the Royal Academy. His technical skill in capturing fine details made him a sought after collaborator for naturalists documenting new species discovered on voyages of discovery.
