Beskrivning
"Plan of the Town and Harbour of Mahon, St Philip's Castle, and its Fortifications" is a detailed topographical map of the strategic port on the island of Minorca. This engraving was published in London by James, John, and Paul Knapton in 1745 as part of the continuation of the history of England. The map features a decorative cartouche titled Explanation which lists thirty-two key locations, including specific bastions, barracks, and naval facilities. It provides a comprehensive record of the military architecture and maritime layout of the harbor during the period of British occupation in the eighteenth century.
Paul de Rapin de Thoyras was a french historian who wrote under English patronage and is best known for his monumental work, L'Histoire d'Angleterre. His multi-volume history was the first comprehensive study of the English constitution and remained a standard reference for several decades. After a military career that included service under William of Orange, he devoted his life to historical research and writing in the Netherlands. His works were extensively translated and illustrated with maps and portraits to provide a visual context for the political and military events he described.
