"Nouvelle Carte de la France" is a large-scale administrative and industrial map detailing the national network of railways and stations. This engraving was published in Paris in 1873 by Fatout and features a prominent decorative vignette in the upper right depicting an ornamental view of Paris. An inset map in the upper left shows the island of Corsica, while extensive statistical tables and indices of railway lines border the central geographic representation. The map serves as a vital document of the rapid infrastructure expansion and territorial organization of France during the late nineteenth century.
Alexandre Vuillemin was a prominent french cartographer and editor based in Paris during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. He was a student of the famous geographer Auguste-Henri Dufour and became well known for producing highly detailed and decorated atlases. His work often focused on the evolving political and industrial landscapes of Europe, with a particular emphasis on the development of transport networks. Vuillemin's maps are recognized for their technical clarity and the integration of aesthetic decorative elements alongside scientific data.
