"Il Vitello Marino" This print depicts a sea calf or seal within an elaborate decorative cartouche supported by cherubs and adorned with floral swags and a small coat of arms. The work is a leaf from "Le Imprese Illustri," a prominent book of emblems and heraldic devices published in Venice. The accompanying Italian text describes the natural history and symbolic virtues of the creature, blending classical mythology with Renaissance scientific observation. The illustration is noted for its refined Mannerist style and was published by Francesco de' Franceschi.

Girolamo Ruscelli was a prolific Italian writer, editor, and cartographer active in Venice during the mid-sixteenth century. He is widely recognized for his expanded edition of Ptolemy's Geography and his influential collections of emblems, which were highly popular among the European nobility. Ruscelli was a central figure in Venetian literary circles and established the Accademia dei Dubbiosi. His works are characterized by a meticulous approach to both text and visual accompaniment, significantly contributing to the development of emblem books as a genre in Renaissance Italy.
