Beskrivning
"Italie et Confederation du Rhin." This hand-coloured engraving depicts a detailed map of the Italian Peninsula and Central Europe during the Napoleonic era. The geography covers Italy, including the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily, and extends north through the Alps to illustrate the territories of the Confederation of the Rhine. Regional boundaries are highlighted with delicate hand-applied outlines in yellow, green, and red, reflecting the complex political divisions of the period. The map features a scenic topographical inset in the upper right corner showing a traditional sailing vessel near a coastline. This work was published in Paris as part of the "Atlas Complet du Précis de la Géographie Universelle," authored by Conrad Malte-Brun and engraved by Lapie.
Conrad Malte-Brun was a Danish-born geographer and journalist who became a leading figure in French geographical studies after being exiled from his homeland. He is best known as the founder of the Société de Géographie and for his monumental work "Précis de la Géographie Universelle," which aimed to provide a comprehensive and scientific description of the world. Pierre Lapie, a prominent French military cartographer and engraver, often collaborated with him to produce high-quality maps noted for their clarity and geographical accuracy. Together, their publications set a new standard for early nineteenth-century cartography, blending historical inquiry with meticulous engraving techniques to document the changing understanding of global and regional history.
