"Oceanique Occidentale" depicts the vast maritime region of Southeast Asia, including the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, Java, the Philippines, and the western portion of New Guinea. The map features hand-coloured outlines to distinguish various colonial territories and island groups, with a decorative cartouche in the lower left corner showcasing local flora and shells. This hand-coloured copper engraving was published in the Atlas Complet du Precis de la Geographie Universelle, issued by Francois Buisson in Paris. The work reflects the early nineteenth-century European geographical understanding of the East Indies and the northern coast of Australia, then referred to as Nouvelle Hollande.

Conrad Malte-Brun was a Danish-born geographer and journalist who became a prominent figure in French scientific circles after being exiled from his homeland. He is best known for his monumental work, Precis de la Geographie Universelle, which attempted to provide a comprehensive and systematic description of the known world. As a co-founder of the Societe de Geographie in Paris, he played a crucial role in the institutionalization of geography as a modern academic discipline. His maps were highly regarded for their clarity and the integration of the latest exploratory data from contemporary voyages.
