Bilder Jacob Cats (1577-1660) – Water on Lime – Engraving (1618)
Beskrivning
"E Frigore Fervor." This circular engraving depicts a large bucket pouring water onto a pile of lime, which reacts by producing clouds of heat and steam. In the background, kilns and a landscape are visible under a cloudy sky. This emblem is part of the work Silenus Alcibiadis, sive, Proteus, published in Middelburg by Johannes Hellenius in 1618. The image serves as a moral metaphor, illustrating how external challenges or cold circumstances can ignite internal passion or energy, much like water causing lime to heat.
Jacob Cats was a prominent Dutch poet, lawyer, and politician who became one of the most famous literary figures of the Dutch Golden Age. He specialized in emblem books that combined moralistic or religious verses with intricate illustrations to guide the conduct of his readers. His works were so widely read that he earned the nickname Father Cats, and his writing played a significant role in shaping Dutch domestic and moral values. Outside of his literary achievements, Cats served as a high-ranking official, including the position of Grand Pensionary of Holland.
