Bilder Sebastian Munster (1488-1552) – View of Vienna – Woodcut (1550)
Beskrivning
"Austria Hunc Habuit Situm." This woodcut provides a panoramic view of the city of Vienna as it appeared in the mid-sixteenth century. The composition features a large, decorative banderole across the upper section containing the Latin title, while the city skyline highlights prominent landmarks such as Saint Stephens Cathedral and various monastic buildings. This print was published in the Cosmographia, a monumental work printed in Basel by Heinrich Petri. The Cosmographia was one of the most successful and popular descriptions of the world in the sixteenth century, combining geographical data with historical anecdotes and numerous illustrations to provide a comprehensive overview of known lands.
Sebastian Munster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and Christian Hebraist who became one of the most important scholars of the Renaissance. He served as a professor at the University of Basel and dedicated decades to compiling geographical information from various sources to create his masterpiece, the Cosmographia. His work was revolutionary for its time, as it integrated maps and city views directly into the text, making complex geographical information accessible to a wider public. Munster’s contributions laid the groundwork for modern cartography and remain a vital record of European topography and urban development during the Reformation era.
