Beskrivning

"Theatrum Veronense 1549." This woodcut provides a detailed architectural view of the Roman Arena in Verona, Italy, as it was understood in the mid-sixteenth century. The composition features a large, flowing banderole across the upper portion with the Latin title and date, while the image itself depicts the tiered seating and arched exterior of the ancient amphitheatre, positioned along a waterway with a small boat. This print was published in the Cosmographia, a landmark geographical work printed in Basel by Heinrich Petri. The Cosmographia was renowned for being the first comprehensive description of the world in the German language, utilizing a vast array of illustrations to document the topography, history, and architecture of major European cities and ancient ruins.

Sebastian Munster was a distinguished German cartographer, cosmographer, and professor of Hebrew at the University of Basel. He is celebrated for his monumental achievement, the Cosmographia, which synthesized geographical knowledge with historical narrative and remained a standard reference for decades. Munster collaborated with numerous artists and scholars to produce accurate woodcut views and maps, significantly influencing the development of descriptive geography during the Renaissance. His work is recognized today for its meticulous detail and its role in disseminating scientific and cultural knowledge to a wide audience during the Reformation era.
