The map illustrates the coastal geography, major river systems, and numerous towns and villages of the region, rendered with precise topographical detail. This engraving was published in the Atlas Novus, an expansive geographical work produced in Amsterdam, which served as one of the most significant and influential atlases of the seventeenth century.

He was the son of the famous cartographer Jodocus Hondius and took over the family publishing business, significantly expanding their collection of copperplates. He is best known for his collaboration with Johannes Janssonius to complete and re-issue the Mercator-Hondius atlas, a project that redefined European map-making through its accuracy and artistic quality.
