Bilder Henricus Hondius (1597-1551) – Map of Switzerland – Hand-coloured engraving (1635)
Beskrivning
"Helvetia cum finitimis regionibus confoederatis." This hand-coloured map provides a detailed cartographic representation of Switzerland and its neighbouring confederated regions. The composition features a prominent, decorative title cartouche in the upper left corner and a secondary scale cartouche in the lower right. The topography illustrates the dramatic alpine landscape, major river systems, and the various territorial divisions of the Swiss Cantons, which are highlighted with delicate hand-colouring. This engraving was published in the Atlas Novus in Amsterdam by Henricus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius. The work was part of an ambitious project to expand and update the geographical records originally established in the Mercator-Hondius atlas series.
Henricus Hondius was a prominent Dutch engraver and cartographer who managed the influential Hondius publishing house in Amsterdam during the seventeenth century. As the son of Jodocus Hondius, he took over the family business and collaborated extensively with his brother-in-law, Johannes Janssonius, to produce some of the most comprehensive atlases of the era. His work was essential in maintaining the commercial and scientific dominance of Dutch cartography across Europe. Hondius is particularly noted for his technical skill in copperplate engraving and his efforts to incorporate the latest maritime and land discoveries into his maps. His publications provided the standard geographical reference for scholars, merchants, and navigators during the Dutch Golden Age.
