Beskrivning

"Schematismus Geographiae Mathematicae." This hand-coloured engraving presents a comprehensive visual compendium of mathematical geography, astronomy, and cartographic projections. The composition features various diagrams illustrating the terrestrial globe, including climate zones, meridians, and the orientation of the axis. Central to the plate are comparative diagrams of the three major celestial models: the heliocentric Copernican system, the geocentric Ptolemaic system, and the hybrid Tychonic system. Additional figures depict globes on stands, armillary spheres, a decorative compass rose, and map projections of the Asian continent. This work was published in Nuremberg by the heirs of the Homann workshop as an educational tool for understanding the scientific principles governing the physical representation of the earth and the heavens during the Enlightenment.

Johann Baptist Homann was a leading German cartographer and publisher who established the most prolific map-making enterprise in eighteenth-century Europe. Based in Nuremberg, he transformed the German cartographic industry by producing high-quality, scientifically accurate maps that were also aesthetically distinguished by elaborate decorative cartouches and vibrant hand-colouring. In 1715, he was appointed Imperial Geographer to Emperor Charles VI and became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Homann’s workshop, later continued by his son and heirs as Homann Heirs, remained a dominant force in international cartography for over a century. His legacy is defined by his contribution to the popularization of geographical and astronomical knowledge through his massive atlases and educational scientific plates.
