"Carte des Couronnes du Nord." This hand-coloured engraving presents a detailed geographical survey of Scandinavia, encompassing the kingdoms of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, along with the regions of Lapland and Finland. The cartography accurately delineates the complex coastlines, major river systems, and mountainous terrain of the northern regions. A large, ornate title cartouche is positioned in the upper left corner, featuring the royal arms of Sweden supported by allegorical figures and military trophies. The map includes a dedication to Charles XII, King of the Swedes, Goths, and Vandals, reflecting the political landscape of the Great Northern War. This work was published in Paris by Delisle, who held the prestigious title of Premier Géographe du Roi, signifying his role as the primary cartographic authority for the French crown.

Guillaume Delisle was a preeminent French cartographer who revolutionized the field of geography through his commitment to scientific accuracy and the use of empirical data. Trained by the astronomer Jean-Dominique Cassini, he applied celestial observations to correct the longitudinal errors prevalent in earlier maps. His workshop in Paris became the center of a new school of cartography that prioritized mathematical precision over the decorative exaggerations common in the Dutch tradition. Delisle was appointed the first Premier Géographe du Roi in 1718, an office created specifically to honor his contributions to the mapping of the world. His legacy is defined by his influential atlases and his role in establishing France as the leading scientific center for geographical research during the early Enlightenment.
