Beskrivning

"Nova et accurata Territorii Ulmensis cum Dominio Wainensi Descriptio." This hand-coloured engraving provides a precise geographical survey of the territory of the Free Imperial City of Ulm and the Lordship of Wain in present-day Baden-Württemberg. The cartography delineates the administrative borders with vibrant red and green outline colouring, showing the complex network of surrounding territories including the Duchy of Württemberg. The landscape is detailed with forests, hills, and numerous settlements, with the city of Ulm prominently positioned at the confluence of the Blau and Danube rivers. A grand allegorical title cartouche in the upper right corner features a personification of the city seated among clouds, accompanied by putti and a blank coat of arms. In the lower right, a secondary cartouche contains a topographical inset map and a scene of river gods reclining by a scale bar. This work was published in Nuremberg and serves as a significant record of the territorial sovereignty and strategic importance of this Swabian region during the early eighteenth century.

Johann Baptist Homann was a leading German cartographer and publisher who established the most prolific map-making enterprise in eighteenth-century Europe. Based in Nuremberg, he transformed the German cartographic industry by producing high-quality, scientifically accurate maps that were also aesthetically distinguished by elaborate decorative cartouches and vibrant hand-colouring. In 1715, he was appointed Imperial Geographer to Emperor Charles VI and became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Homann workshop, later continued by his son and heirs as Homann Heirs, remained a dominant force in international cartography for over a century. His legacy is defined by his contribution to the popularization of geographical and astronomical knowledge through his massive atlases and educational scientific plates.
