Beskrivning

"Le Tyrol sous le nom duquel sont compris le Comté de Tyrol les Comtés unies de Bregentz, Feldkirck, Montfort, Pludentz &c et les Evechés de Trent, et de Brixen." This hand-coloured engraving presents a detailed topographical and administrative map of the historical region of Tyrol, including the Bishoprics of Trent and Brixen and the Vorarlberg territories. The cartography emphasizes the complex Alpine terrain, meticulously rendering mountain ranges, valleys, and river systems. Internal borders are distinguished by vibrant hand-coloured outlines, highlighting the various constituent counties and ecclesiastical lands. A highly decorative rococo title cartouche is featured in the lower right corner, characterized by elaborate asymmetrical scrollwork, foliate motifs, and architectural elements. This work was published in Paris by Robert de Vaugondy as part of the "Atlas Universel," a landmark achievement in eighteenth-century French commercial cartography known for its clarity and scientific rigor.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, and his son Didier, were among the most influential French cartographers of the Enlightenment era. Inheriting the substantial cartographic stock of the Sanson family, they meticulously revised and updated older plates using the latest astronomical observations and survey data. Their workshop in Paris was renowned for producing maps that balanced technical accuracy with high artistic quality, eventually earning Gilles the title of Geographer to the King. The "Atlas Universel" served as their most significant contribution, providing a definitive visual record of the European political landscape for a broad scholarly and aristocratic audience. Their legacy is defined by their systematic approach to geography and their role in establishing France as the leading center for map production during the mid-eighteenth century.
