Bilder Joan Blaeu (1596–1673) – Map of the City of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne – France – Engraving (1682)
Beskrivning
"Civitas Sancti Ioannis Maurianensis." This engraving presents a detailed bird's-eye topographical view of the city of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, located in the Savoie region of the French Alps. The composition captures the urban layout nestled within a deep valley, surrounded by towering, jagged mountain peaks that emphasize the dramatic geography of the site. Notable architectural landmarks, including the cathedral and various monastic buildings, are identified by an alphabetical key in the lower right corner. Above the scene, a large, flowing banner contains the Latin title, flanked by a celestial heraldic crest supported by a putto. This work was published in Amsterdam as part of the "Theatrum Statuum Sabaudiae Ducis," a monumental three-volume atlas commissioned to document the cities, palaces, and territories of the Duchy of Savoy.
Joan Blaeu was a preeminent Dutch cartographer and the official mapmaker for the Dutch East India Company. He succeeded his father, Willem Blaeu, in managing one of the largest and most prestigious printing houses in seventeenth-century Europe. He is most famous for his "Atlas Maior," the most expensive and comprehensive publication of its time, which set the standard for cartographic excellence and artistic beauty. Blaeu’s work is characterized by its meticulous technical detail, refined engraving, and the integration of sophisticated topographical views within regional surveys. His legacy remains a cornerstone of the Golden Age of Dutch cartography, reflecting the era’s ambitious drive to visualize and document the known world with scientific precision and grand aesthetic flair.
