Beskrivning

"Prostrior Pars Danubii a Neoburgo usque ad Ratisbonam." This hand-coloured engraving presents a detailed hydrographical and topographical survey of a significant section of the Danube River in Bavaria, extending from Neuburg in the west to Regensburg in the east. The cartography emphasizes the meandering course of the river and its numerous tributaries, with surrounding territories distinguished by vibrant hand-coloured outlines. The landscape is meticulously detailed, showing the locations of fortified towns, monastic estates, and rural villages nestled among the rolling hills of the Danube valley. A decorative title cartouche is featured in the upper right corner, adorned with classical allegorical figures and heraldic symbols representative of the regional principalities. This work was published in Nuremberg and serves as an important record of the strategic and economic geography of the Holy Roman Empire during the early eighteenth century.

Johann Baptist Homann was a leading German cartographer and publisher who established the most prolific map-making enterprise in eighteenth-century Europe. Based in Nuremberg, he transformed the German cartographic industry by producing high-quality, scientifically accurate maps that were also aesthetically distinguished by elaborate decorative cartouches and vibrant hand-colouring. In 1715, he was appointed Imperial Geographer to Emperor Charles VI and became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Homann workshop, later continued by his son and heirs as Homann Heirs, remained a dominant force in international cartography for over a century. His legacy is defined by his contribution to the popularization of geographical and astronomical knowledge through his massive atlases and educational scientific plates.
