"Partie Septentrionale du Cercle d'Autriche qui comprend l'Archiduche d'Autriche divisé en ses huit Quartiers et la haute partie du Duche de Stirie." This hand-coloured engraving presents a detailed geographical survey of the northern territories of the Circle of Austria, specifically focusing on the Archduchy of Austria and the upper regions of the Duchy of Styria. The cartography delineates the traditional eight quarters of the Archduchy with vibrant hand-coloured outlines, accurately showing the mountainous topography, river systems including the Danube, and major urban centers such as Vienna. A decorative title cartouche is featured in the lower right corner, showcasing an eagle crest atop an architectural plinth surrounded by surveying instruments, a globe, and draped fabric. This work was published in Paris as part of the "Atlas Universel," a landmark production of mid-eighteenth-century French cartography renowned for its clarity and reliance on updated astronomical observations.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, and his son Didier, were among the most influential French cartographers of the Enlightenment. Inheriting the substantial cartographic stock of the Sanson family, they meticulously revised and updated older plates to reflect the most current geographical knowledge. Gilles held the prestigious position of Geographer to the King and was highly regarded for his systematic approach to map production. The "Atlas Universel" served as a primary reference for scholars and aristocrats throughout Europe, establishing the Vaugondy workshop as a leader in the commercial map trade. His legacy is defined by the transition from purely decorative cartography to a more scientific and standardized visual language that prioritized geographic precision.
