"Chirurgie" This engraving illustrates various surgical instruments and techniques used in ophthalmic medicine during the eighteenth century. The upper section shows three detailed figures demonstrating the manual manipulation of the eye with specialized needles and specula, likely for the treatment of cataracts. The lower section features a technical catalog of surgical tools, including curved needles, handled probes, and spring-loaded retractors designed for delicate ocular procedures. This plate was created for the Encyclopedia of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d Alembert, a monumental publication of the French Enlightenment that aimed to document every branch of human knowledge and the latest advancements in medical science. It was printed in Paris by the publisher Andre le Breton.
Robert Benard was a French engraver who achieved significant recognition for his mastery of technical and scientific illustration. He served as the primary director for the engraving department of the Diderot Encyclopedia, where he supervised the production of over two thousand copperplate prints. His expertise was essential in providing clear visual translations of complex medical, industrial, and botanical subjects for a wide audience. Throughout his career in Paris, Benard operated a prolific studio that remained a central hub for the dissemination of informational prints during the late eighteenth century.
