"Chirurgie" This engraving illustrates various eighteenth-century surgical techniques and apparatuses for treating conditions of the mouth and face. The central figures demonstrate the application of complex head bandages and supportive frameworks used to stabilize the jaw or treat facial deformities, while smaller diagrams focus on the suturing of the lips. The lower section features a technical catalog of surgical instruments, including a large handled probe and a cylindrical cannula used in reconstructive or corrective procedures. This plate was created for the Encyclopedia of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, a landmark publication of the French Enlightenment that sought to systematically document every branch of human knowledge, including the latest advancements in medical science. It was printed in Paris by the publisher Andre le Breton.
Robert Benard was a French engraver who achieved significant recognition for his mastery of technical and scientific illustration. He served as the primary director for the engraving department of the Diderot Encyclopedia project, where he supervised the production of over two thousand copperplate prints. His expertise was essential in providing clear visual translations of complex medical, industrial, and biological subjects for a wide audience. Throughout his career in Paris, Benard operated a prolific studio that remained a central hub for the dissemination of informational prints during the late eighteenth century.
