"Chirurgie" This engraving presents a detailed anatomical study of the human pelvis, specifically focused on obstetric measurements. The upper figure displays a superior view of the pelvic inlet with intersecting lines indicating the dimensions and diameters of the pelvic cavity. The lower figure provides an inferior view showing the sacrum and the pelvic outlet. This plate was produced for the Encyclopedia of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, which was a landmark project of the French Enlightenment that aimed to systematically categorize human knowledge, including the latest advancements in medical science and osteology. It was printed in Paris by the publisher Andre le Breton.
Robert Benard was a French engraver who achieved significant recognition for his mastery of technical and scientific illustration. He served as the primary director for the engraving department of the Diderot Encyclopedia project, where he supervised the production of over two thousand copperplate prints. His expertise was essential in providing clear visual translations of complex medical, industrial, and biological subjects for a wide audience. Throughout his career in Paris, Benard operated a prolific studio that remained a central hub for the dissemination of informational prints during the late eighteenth century.
