Bilder Mattheus Smallegange (1624-1710) – View of Slot van Moermond and Slot Windenburg – Engraving (1696)
Beskrivning
"Slot van Moermond" and "Slot Windenburg" This engraving presents two topographical views of noble estates in the province of Zeeland. The upper register depicts the Moermond Castle near Renesse, showing the manor house, formal gate, and surrounding parkland with cattle grazing in the foreground. The lower register illustrates Windenburg Castle, a fortified tower house surrounded by a circular moat and a meticulously planted perimeter of trees, accessed by a long wooden bridge. These views were created for the Cronyk van Zeeland, an ambitious historical and geographical chronicle of the region. The work was published in Middelburg by Johannes Meertens and in Amsterdam by Abraham van Someren.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, translator, and genealogist primarily known for his comprehensive documentation of Zeeland. He spent decades compiling historical records and commissioning detailed illustrations to accompany his written chronicles of the Low Countries. His most significant contribution remains the extensive description of the islands and noble houses of the Zeeland province, which serves as a vital record of seventeenth-century Dutch architecture and land use. Smallegange worked closely with skilled engravers to ensure the geographical and architectural accuracy of the plates used in his publications.
