"Peches aux Filets" This engraving depicts the complex operations of large scale net fishing in the eighteenth century. The upper register features a detailed view of a vast net system being managed by multiple small boats on the open sea, showing the coordination required to encircle large schools of fish. The lower register illustrates the physical labor of four men on a shoreline pulling in a heavy, fish laden net from the water. Each section focuses on the mechanical and human elements of the maritime industry. This work was published in the French edition of the voyages of discovery, translated and compiled by Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Suard and printed in Paris.
Robert Benard was a prominent French engraver who served as the director of the engraving department for the Diderot Encyclopedie. He specialized in technical and scientific illustration, personally supervising the production of over 2000 plates that documented industrial processes and geographic discoveries. Benard's work is defined by its extreme clarity and rigorous attention to detail, which was essential for communicating complex engineering and maritime data to an Enlightenment audience. His contributions were fundamental to the success of major scientific publications of the eighteenth century.
