"Veüe du Port et des Environs de Ville Franche" This engraving presents a detailed topographical map and bird's-eye view of the harbor and surroundings of Villefranche-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean coast. This work was published in the Les Forces de l'Europe, ou Description des Principales Villes avec leurs Fortifications, printed in Paris by Nicolas de Fer.
Nicolas de Fer was a prolific French cartographer, engraver, and publisher who held the prestigious title of Geographer to the King. He was known for his extensive output of over 600 maps and atlases that documented the territorial expansions and military fortifications of France under Louis XIV. De Fer's work was highly valued for its decorative appeal and its ability to communicate the strategic importance of European geography to the royal court and the public. His publications, including the Petit et Nouveau Atlas, were widely influential and remain significant historical records of seventeenth-century urban planning and military architecture.
