Beskrivning
"Iobs Vrienden komen hem besoecken om hem te beklagen en te vertroosten" This engraving depicts a central scene from the Book of Job, illustrating the moment his three friends arrive to offer sympathy and comfort during his period of immense suffering. The composition features Job seated on a mound of ash or earth at the left, his body showing signs of affliction as he looks up toward his companions. Two of the friends stand before him in draped robes, their expressions and gestures conveying concern, while a third figure is seated on the ground to the right. The background includes a simple, rustic structure and a distant landscape under a vast sky, emphasizing the isolation of Job's ordeal. This work was published in a series of biblical illustrations printed in Amsterdam.
Piter Schulz, also known as Pieter Schut, was a Dutch engraver and draughtsman active in Amsterdam during the mid to late seventeenth century. He specialized in producing small scale biblical and topographical illustrations, often collaborating with prominent publishers like Nicolaes Visscher. Schulz was known for his ability to translate complex narratives into clear, detailed compositions that were widely accessible to the Dutch public. His work contributed to the rich tradition of seventeenth century Dutch printmaking, which emphasized both technical precision and religious storytelling. Schulz's engravings remain significant for their documentation of contemporary artistic styles and their role in the dissemination of biblical imagery in northern Europe.
