Bilder Bonne (fl. 18th century) – World Map (Carte du Monde) – Antique Engraving
Beskrivning
This elegant 18th-century world map presents a global view of the continents, oceans, and major regions as understood in the Enlightenment period. The map is labeled in French and shows Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia (Nouvelle Hollande), along with important seas, trade routes, and geographical landmarks.
Notable historical features include early depictions of North America, South America, Greenland, Japan, China, and Southeast Asia, as well as period naming such as Tartarie, Nouvelle Hollande, and Terre de Feu. The oceans are clearly marked, including the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, with latitude and longitude gridlines enhancing both scientific and navigational value.
An inset map at the lower left shows the Island of St. Helena (Carte de l’Isle Ste. Hélène), adding historical and colonial interest—particularly relevant due to St. Helena’s later association with Napoleon’s exile.
Rendered in refined copper engraving, this map is a fine example of French Enlightenment cartography, combining decorative clarity with educational and historical significance. It is ideal for collectors of antique world maps, maritime history, or 18th-century geographic prints.
