Beskrivning

This historical engraved map documents the Battle of Cuneo (Coni) during the War of the Austrian Succession. The detailed topographical rendering illustrates the fortified city of Cuneo situated at the confluence of the Stura and Gesso rivers. The composition meticulously plots the military positions of the opposing forces: the combined French and Spanish armies (the Gallispan army) under the Prince of Conti and Infante Philip of Spain, and the Sardinian army under King Charles Emmanuel III. Military formations are depicted with precise rectangular symbols, indicating infantry and cavalry positions, alongside tactical labels identifying specific regiments and batteries. The map is set within a simple linear border and includes a decorative title cartouche and distance scale in "Toises." It was published in Paris by Le Rouge, "Ingénieur Géographe du Roy," in 1744.

Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a prominent French geographer, cartographer, and engraver who held the prestigious title of Engineer-Geographer to King Louis XV. Born in Germany, he established himself in Paris and became one of the most prolific map publishers of the mid-eighteenth century. His work is noted for its clarity, technical accuracy, and extensive documentation of contemporary European conflicts and urban developments. In addition to military plans and atlases, Le Rouge is famously known for introducing English garden designs to France through his influential series Détails des nouveaux jardins à la mode. His maps remain significant primary sources for historians, reflecting the sophisticated cartographic standards of the French Enlightenment.
