Bilder Georges-Louis Le Rouge (1712–1790) – Map of the Battle of Cartagena de Indias – Engraved Map (1741)
Beskrivning
This historical engraved map documents the British assault on the Spanish colonial port of Cartagena de Indias (in present-day Colombia) during the War of Jenkins' Ear. The composition features a detailed coastal and hydrographic plan of the bay, showing the city of Cartagena and its surrounding defensive fortifications, including Terra Bomba and the forts of San Felipe and San Lazaro. To the left, an extensive alphabetical key (A-Y) details specific military actions, such as the positions of British ships under Admiral Vernon and the landing sites of troops used to attack the Spanish batteries. The map is oriented with a compass rose and includes a distance scale in English miles, with the imprint "Suivant l'original Anglois 1741" indicating it was based on a contemporary British source.
Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a prominent French geographer, cartographer, and engraver who held the prestigious title of Engineer-Geographer to King Louis XV. Born in Germany, he established himself in Paris and became one of the most prolific map publishers of the mid-eighteenth century. His work is noted for its clarity, technical accuracy, and extensive documentation of contemporary European and colonial conflicts. In addition to military plans and atlases, Le Rouge is famously known for introducing English garden designs to France through his influential series Détails des nouveaux jardins à la mode. His maps remain significant primary sources for historians, reflecting the sophisticated cartographic standards and the intense geopolitical rivalries of the French Enlightenment.
