Bilder Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent (1778–1846) – View of Tenerife from Punta de Anaga – Engraving (1804)
Beskrivning
"Vue de Tenerife, par la Pointe de Naga" This engraving features a panoramic maritime view of the coastline of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. The composition emphasizes the dramatic volcanic topography of the island, with the prominent peak of Mount Teide rising above a layer of low-lying clouds. The rugged cliffs of the Anaga peninsula are rendered in the foreground with fine hatched lines to convey the rocky texture of the terrain against the calm surface of the Atlantic Ocean. This plate was published in Paris as part of the atlas for the Voyage dans les quatre principales îles des mers d'Afrique, printed by Baudouin in 1804.
Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent was a French naturalist, military officer, and geographer who participated in several major scientific expeditions. During the Baudin expedition to the Australian lands, he explored the African islands and the Canary archipelago, documenting their geology and botany. He served as a colonel under Napoleon and later directed the scientific exploration of Morea and Algeria. His prolific writings and detailed cartographic works contributed significantly to the natural history and geographical knowledge of the early nineteenth century.
