Beskrivning

"Le Duche de Limbourg, le Comte de Dalem, la Seigneurie de Fauquemont" This hand-coloured engraving presents a detailed topographical and administrative map of the Duchy of Limbourg and surrounding territories, including parts of modern-day Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. The composition meticulously documents the regional geography, showing the courses of major rivers like the Meuse, the dense forestation of the Ardennes, and the positioning of numerous fortified towns, villages, and ecclesiastical sites. Regional boundaries are emphasized with vibrant, hand-applied washes of pink, green, and yellow, allowing for a clear distinction between the various seigneuries and counties. In the upper right corner, an extensive legend provides a key to the symbols used for cities, abbeys, castles, and mills, while the geographical orientation is indicated by the cardinal directions labeled along the outer borders. This map was published in Paris by the artist as part of his significant contributions to French cartographic excellence during the mid-seventeenth century.

Nicolas Sanson was a pioneering French cartographer widely regarded as the father of French geography. He began his career as a military engineer but soon turned to cartography, eventually earning the title of Geographer to King Louis XIII and later Louis XIV. Sanson's work marked a shift away from the highly decorative Dutch style toward a more scientific and accurate approach to mapmaking, emphasizing clarity and updated geographical data. His workshop in Paris became the center of a cartographic dynasty, with his sons and later heirs continuing his legacy of producing authoritative world atlases and regional maps. Sanson's prolific output played a crucial role in establishing France as the leading center for cartography in Europe throughout the late seventeenth century.
