Beskrivning
"Mappemonde en deux Hémisphères" This hand-coloured engraving presents a global view of the earth divided into Eastern and Western hemispheres. The composition provides a detailed cartographic representation of the continents as they were documented in the mid-nineteenth century, including recent discoveries in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Political boundaries are delineated with delicate hand-coloured outlines, while the oceans are marked with major currents and historical exploration routes. At the bottom center, a comparative diagram illustrates the relative heights of the world's most significant mountain ranges. The map is decorated with an elegant title script at the top center and includes various geographical notes regarding the latest observations of the time. This work was published in Paris by G. Beaupré in 1851.
Pierre M. Lapie was a distinguished French military cartographer and engraver who served as the director of the topographic section of the War Office. Working frequently with his son, Alexandre Emile Lapie, he produced numerous highly regarded atlases and individual maps that were noted for their scientific accuracy and clarity. Their collaborative efforts, such as the Atlas Universel de Géographie, became standard references during the first half of the nineteenth century. The Lapie family played a central role in the advancement of French cartography, bridging the gap between decorative classical mapmaking and the more rigorous requirements of modern military and scientific geography. Their maps remain prized by collectors for their technical mastery and historical significance in documenting the age of global exploration.
