Beskrivning

"Pêches aux Filets" illustrates various coastal fishing techniques using large stationary nets. The composition features a topographical view of a shoreline where a long net structure extends into the water, supported by a system of ropes and anchors. In the foreground, a fisherman is depicted carrying a basket and a hand net near a small coastal building, while several sailing vessels are visible on the horizon. This copper engraving was published in Paris as part of the monumental Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. The work served as a cornerstone of the Enlightenment, aiming to provide a systematic visual and technical record of contemporary industries and trades.

Robert Benard was a highly accomplished French engraver who specialized in technical and natural history subjects. As the director of the engraving department for the Diderot Encyclopédie, he personally oversaw the production of at least 1800 plates, ensuring a high level of consistency and detail. His work is characterized by clean, precise lines and a masterful use of cross-hatching to convey perspective, texture, and complex mechanical systems. Benard's extensive contributions were vital in making the scientific and industrial knowledge of the 18th century accessible to a wider European audience through clear visual documentation.
