Beskrivning
"Tobias strijckt sijns Vaders oogen met de galle van den Vis, waer door hij siende wert" depicts the biblical scene from the Book of Tobit where the young Tobias applies fish gall to the eyes of his blind father, Tobit, to restore his sight. The central group is surrounded by witnesses in a classical architectural setting, while an angel is shown departing in the background on the right. This woodcut was published in Amsterdam as part of the Toneel der rarieteiten, a series illustrating notable biblical events. The work is a representative example of Dutch Golden Age graphic art, characterized by its fine linework and dramatic narrative composition.
Pieter Schut was a Dutch Golden Age engraver and etcher active in Amsterdam during the mid-seventeenth century. He was a prolific creator of biblical illustrations, topographical views, and historical scenes, often working for prominent publishers such as Claes Janszoon Visscher. Schut is particularly noted for his skill in condensing complex narratives into small-scale prints that remained accessible to a wide public audience.
