"Tobias vanght onderweegh een vis daer hij de galle en lever uythaelt en mede neemt" depicts the biblical journey of young Tobias and the Archangel Raphael. The composition shows Tobias standing by a riverbank holding a large fish he has just caught, while the angel stands beside him providing guidance. In the background, a small dog accompanies them through a hilly landscape with classical buildings in the distance. This woodcut was published in Amsterdam as part of the Toneel der rarieteiten, a series illustrating notable biblical events. The work is a representative example of Dutch Golden Age graphic art, characterized by its fine linework and dramatic narrative composition.
Pieter Schut was a Dutch Golden Age engraver and etcher active in Amsterdam during the mid-seventeenth century. He was a prolific creator of biblical illustrations, topographical views, and historical scenes, often working for prominent publishers such as Claes Janszoon Visscher. Schut is particularly noted for his skill in condensing complex narratives into small-scale prints that remained accessible to a wide public audience. His contribution to the visual culture of the Netherlands helped to standardize the iconography of many scriptural stories during a period of intense religious and artistic development.
